RIDGE VENTING

The "Ridge," on your home is at the peak. Usually the highest point of the A-frame. Ridge vents create channels that let air and moisture escape at the peak of the attic. A two inch cut is made along each side of the ridge (front and back). This cut is then covered with the ridge vent.

The vent keeps an airway open while shingles called ridge-cap are fastened through the ridge vent into the roof decking. These shingle caps keep out rain and exterior elements, like an umbrella or helmet.

Venting is needed for a healthier, longer-lasting roof performance. Normal household activities can wreak havoc on a roof and attic if proper roof ventilation is not provided:

In cold weather, warm air generated by laundry, showers, dish washing and cooking can linger in the house and cause moisture build-up. This moisture causes rafters, roof decking and framing to rot and decay. Also causes shingles to buckle, blister, curl and rot.

In the summer, heat build-up encourages premature aging and cracking of wood and roofing materials. Unwanted heat can also transfer back down into living areas, reducing energy efficiency. A properly functioning ventilation system will allow this undesired heat to rise and escape through the ridge vent.

The only way to combat these problems is with a balanced ventilation system. In a balanced system, wind blowing over the ridge creates a negative pressure that draws the warmer air out of the attic. Replacement air enters through the undereave or soffit vents, bathes the underside of the roof, and exits at the ridge cap through ridge vents, roof vents or gable vents. Even with no wind, the natural convection action of rising warm air maintains a continuous airflow along the underside of the roof. It’s a system that works year ’round with no moving parts or energy consumption.

Ventilation allows outside air to flow naturally upward and out of attic. This action promotes a cooler, drier attic. It also helps prevent moisture from becoming trapped in insulation, structural wood, shingles and roof deck (plywood).

A properly ventilated attic also helps prevent rotting, mildew, drywall damage, peeling paint and warped siding. Offers year-round performance for consistent ventilation without energy consumption. No fans or electricity is needed with this system, it's proven, tested and natural. Ventilation is an essential component of a complete Owens Corning Roofing System. These Owens Corning ventilation products will help prevent damage and premature aging caused by moisture in the winter and excess heat in the summer.
